An introduction to Community Counseling Center (1573k)

Our History

With roots dating back to 1874, Community Counseling Center is one of Maine's oldest and most comprehensive private, nonprofit family service agencies, making a difference in the lives of over 6,000 individuals and families each year though prevention, education, treatment and wellness programs. In every program, whether it is a clinical intervention or a wellness service, we believe in the power of the human spirit, the innate strengths of individuals, and we practice in partnership with our clients to promote recovery and build community.

Community Counseling Center, as it is now known, is the result of the merger of five greater Portland area agencies in 1971: Child and Family Services, Unmarried Parents’ Services and Adoption Program, Traveler’s Aid Society, Portland Fraternity and South Portland Family Service Association. Some of these pre-merger organizations date back over 130 years and helped provide needed community services, like “friendly visits” to Civil War widows and children, and helping Depression era individuals and families obtain needed resources.

Today, Community Counseling Center meets the needs of children, adults, elders and families in our community by helping them overcome unexpected challenges of life through evidence-based, high quality social work services that teach coping skills and build resilience throughout the lifespan.

Community Counseling Center is licensed by the Department of Health and Human Services, accredited by the national Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services, a member of the Alliance for Children and Families, a partner in the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and supported by the United Way of Greater Portland.

Our Vision

We envision a community strengthened by diverse individuals and families who are empowered and supported by caring environments.

Our Mission

Community Counseling Center:

• Develops and provides quality, outcome-based services that enhance the emotional strength and well-being of Maine residents throughout their lives.

• Provides counseling, prevention, and education to resolve personal and interpersonal issues through traditional and specialty services.

• Identifies, evaluates, and responds to community needs through innovative services.

• Encourages community collaboration and partnerships through leadership and advocacy.

• Promotes quality of care and best practices in our community by providing consultation, education, and training.

Our Values

We recognize that healthy families are vital to a healthy society. A family consists of two or more people, whether living together or apart, related by blood, marriage, adoption, or commitment to care for one another.

We recognize the diversity and inherent worth of each individual, who collectively forms the backbone of our community.

We value children as the future of our society and promote their right to care and nurturing in a safe, healthy environment.

We respect elders, for they represent the wisdom and rich history of our community, they pass on to our youth through their actions and words.

Our Operating Principles

The staff at Community Counseling Center will be guided by these basic Operational Principles in all our services and activities:

  • Acting with Integrity – Integrity, trust, honesty, confidentiality, respect, and fiscal responsibility form our foundation.
  • Satisfying Our Consumers – We will help our consumers identify their needs, and work diligently toward meeting and exceeding their expectations.
  • Community Service – Our goal will be to bring out the greatest potential of every individual and family in our community who needs our help.
  • Using Sound Business Practices – We will use proven, sound business practices to manage Agency activities in a competitive environment.
