The Trauma Intervention Program of Portland, Maine (TIP) trains citizen volunteers to provide emotional and practical support to victims of traumatic events and their families in the first few hours following a tragedy. Volunteers are called to fires, car accidents, traumatic injuries, and unexpected deaths. While the calls they receive vary greatly, one constant remains: victims of tragedy do not have to face their crisis alone, thanks to TIP. TIP, a program of Community Counseling Center, was established in 2004 in partnership with the Junior League of Portland, Maine. TIP works in cooperation with TIP National, the Portland, South Portland, Gorham, Westbrook, Scarborough, Falmouth and Windham police and fire departments, the Maine State Police and Maine Medical Center. Volunteers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. To learn more about TIP's accomplishments in 2007, click here (pdf, 191k).
Why TIP? Immediate emotional first aid and practical support have been shown to dramatically reduce the potential of developing serious, long-term emotional problems. TIP volunteers arrive at the scene within 20 minutes of being called, and their assistance enables first responders to focus on their next assignment.
Getting Involved TIP is currently accepting applications for the 2008 Volunteer Training Academy, which will begin October 16th. For more information about becoming a TIP volunteer call Avery Jenkins at 207.874.1030 ext 509. To make a gift to TIP, please call Nicole Holt at 207.874.1030 ext. 336 or click the donation button.
